Handicap 6 - Championship Contenders

February 7, 2018

We’re just over a month away from the Club Champs Race (11th March) and a few new contenders showed their wares at Sunday’s Handicap Race #6. Jody Brownley (1.14.31) and Matt Hicks (1.07.19) locked in as the bookie’s favourites with the day’s fastest times but the jostling for podium finishes is growing more interesting.

Movers & Shakers

Ryan McNally’s times are dropping to a point where he is only one dodgy prawn away from taking out the club champs and is starting to make a few around him nervous (don’t take any offers of a free dinner Matt). Belinda So keeps on slashing her times race by race and has come into strong calculations for a top three place at club champs, as well as regularly snaffling long course championship points through a number of top six finishes over the season. A couple of big finishes could see her take home the silverware at the end of season. Christine Roberts is looking a sure bet to bring her long course time under the 1.30 mark before season’s end.

High Points

27 kids got out of bed early on a Sunday morn to participate in the third of five junior races. We’ve had a little growth in the duathlon, with six competitors this week

Welcome on Board

Naomi Bath, Todd Dennis, Tim Castle and Brendan O’Donnell joined us for their first race with the club. We hope you liked what we offer and will see you back again

Finish of the Day (FOD)

Cheryl Pitt and Hannah Ward. Hannah went for the sneaky - don’t - breathe - for - 20m in creeping up to Cheryl in the finishing chute but Cheryl just responded in time (course officials are checking footage of an alleged coat hanger delivered on the finish line)

Jim Thompson brought the bounce back into transition with a spectacular backflip incorporating a double twist. We might get Jim and Greg Tossel to put on a choreographed display next race (I’m thinking ‘Life in the Fast Lane’ by the Eagles playing in the background)

Matty Hicks started a new cyclocross category by taking on the Osmetti Drive stone path for two laps (and still had the fastest time – bloody hell!)

What’s Next?

Great day and good to see everyone out there, with 45 competitors in total for the senior tri. Norseman now awaits – a ripping course with the challenge of the heat and hills and the joy of an outdoor pool. Be there! Remember also we have the Esperance training weekend on soon. A memorable event, so drop your name into Di ( or 0439 902 270) to book an accommodation placement.
