Save the Best For Last

The final handicap race in the Kalgoorlie Tri Club 2008/9 season resulted in a flood of personal bests, a testament to some well targeted training programs. In the long course Shane Joyce (1:31:50 off 22 minutes) achieved the rare feat of being last to start and first to finish, overtaking every competitor to take out first place. Joyce completed the 6km run leg in 22:14 and passed a fast improving Christine Roberts (1:31:59 off scratch) in the final straight to win by nine seconds.  Tim Langley (1:32:11 off 16) surprised with a stronger swim leg to claim third place and in doing so recorded his fastest time of the season. Jody Brownley (1:14:36) set the fastest women’s long course time. Mark van Maane (1:46:07) successfully completed his first long course.

In the short course Emma Dunne (1:04:26 off 20 minutes) took line honours from Wayne Stewart (1:07:20 off 25) and junior competitor Ben Wood (1:08:51 off 26). Bryan Tepper made a strong return to racing in recording the fastest men’s time of 35:05. Michelle Rowell produced the women’s fastest time stopping the clock in an impressive 42:15

The Goldfields Classic, the club’s annual Olympic distance event will be held on Sunday 5th April and will mark the last official club event for the season  entry forms are available here  Goldfields Classic Entry Form or by contacting club president Steve Gibson on 0411 884 058.

Season Speeds Up

Perfect race conditions greeted the 40 competitors who turned out for Handicap Race #8 in the Kalgoorlie Tri Club Series. Many took advantage of this by slashing their times to record personal bests. In the short course event Debra Murphy (1:07:50 off 19 minutes) reaped the benefits of the hard work she has put into running by overtaking several competitors in the final leg to record her first win for the season. Cathy Raccanello (1:08:31 off 21 minutes) and Julie Kuskopf (1:08:54 off 12) filled out the minor placings. Kuskopf sliced more than three minutes off her personal best. Michelle Rowell also impressed with the fastest run leg of the day. Anthea Stacey recorded the fastest women’s time (39:41) with newcomer Wayne Stewart (44:28) the quickest of the short course men.

In the long course a large field of 29 athletes made for a competitive event. Rob Hall (1:30:49 off 7) had time to savour his victory, leading two fellow hairy rug competitors home to finish more than a minute clear of David Clark (1:32:05 off 5), with Ian Malseed third (1:32:12 off 8). Dave had to overcome a disagreeable green plum that resulted in a new course record of eight barfs. Darren Barker was well pleased with his return to long course racing in finishing fourth and recording his fastest time for several seasons. Shane Joyce lowered his personal best again to record the fastest men’s time 1:11:41. Jody Brownley was the fastest amongst the women, stopping the clock at 1:14:27. A review of club records show this as being the fastest women’s time recorded on this course. Other significant performances included: Christine Roberts (1:34:13) lowering her PB by three minutes, Geoff Mazzuchelli (1:31:24) stepping back up to the long course after a long recovery from illness, Simon Cheesman (1:41:27) edging closer to his goal of sub 1:40:00 time and Jenny Clothier finishing in a time slightly lower than her blood alcohol level.

Kalgoorlie athletes will be travelling down for the Esperance Classic, an Olympic distance event held on Sunday 8th March. This is the third race in the four event Goldfields Esperance Tri Series.

Norseman – Damn Hot – Damn Difficult

The heat was on in Norseman on Saturday afternoon, with racing commencing in 36 degree heat. Thank goodness we start races by getting wet first (though this failed to cool one competitor’s temperature!) Despite the heat and the 200km travel the annual Norseman race attracted a healthy field of 36 athletes.

The long course appeared to be a battle amongst a group of four with Steve Gibson, Sam Penglis, Andrew Budnick and Shane Joyce breaking clear of the field during the swim and run legs. After several changes in the lead only 90 seconds separated these four at the start of the run leg. Shane Joyce dug deep to take the lead during the first lap and take line honours. The other leaders were made to feel as though they were standing still when Jody Brownley came storming past after leaving the final transition nearly four minutes behind the leader. Brownley was the first female competitor and second overall. Steve Gibson and Andrew Budnick claimed the minor places for the men, with Susan Brand and Ruth Murdie the women’s second and third placegetters.

Several other long course competitors put in noteworthy performances. Darren Barker somehow produced the fourth fastest bike leg despite him and his bike spending little time together over the last year – what’s your secret Darren? Christine Roberts is beginning to sneak past a few more team mates as the season goes on and finished the run leg looking strong. Dave Clark played hard the Friday night, slept to midday and then completed the race – some people live and learn Dave and others just live! Kelly Darke undertook her longest event yet and overcame some obstacles at the start of the race to finish the event. She was looking good until ‘Slammer’ Dunks in an act of cruelty decided to make the last 50m a sprint for line honours, causing a few of Kelly’s muscles to misbehave. Shame on you ‘Slammer!’

In the short course event Scotty Newman chased hard during the cycle and run leg to catch Daniel Scott and claim victory. Mark Van Maanen took third place for the men. We all celebrate success in different ways – Scott opted for a 200km ride back to Kalgoorlie. Anthea Stacey led the women’s field from the very first swim stroke and held on to win by more than five minutes from Michelle Rowell and Lesa Blackman. Special mention to birthday girl Toni Miller who gave herself an early birthday present with a solid performance over all three legs.

Congratulations to all who took up the Norseman challenge and to the support crew on the day. Well done to Gibbo, Jenny and the committee for making it a great weekend. Organising an event from 200km away is never an easy task. Racing is back home next weekend with handicap race#8 your second last chance to collect club championship points.

Favorites Take Honours

Pre-race favorites lived up to their reputations by taking the honours in the ‘Kalgoorlie Tri Club 2009 Championship Race.’ With blustery conditions and the knowledge that the run leg had been lengthened to correct the 6km distance, fast times and personal bests were always going to be tough but being a scratch event the name of the game was racing.

Shane Joyce took the lead during the cycle leg and broke away from the pack to take out the men’s long course title in a time of 1:13:18. Andrew Budnick (1:16:01), who continues to impress in his debut season came second with club president Steve Gibson(1:16:54) finishing  third after running down Sam Penglis (1:18:04).

Susan Brand (1:27:36) opened up a large gap on her opposition in the first two legs and held on to beat a fast finishing Jenny Clothier (1:28:08). Jo Marshall (1:32:41) claimed the final podium finish. Kelly Darke (1:38:21) impressed in her first outing on the long course and will be looking to improve on this over the remainder of the season to challenge the pacesetters. A special mentions goes to Jody Brownley competing as a guest athlete and recording a time of 1:22:19. Welcome to the club.

In the short course Scott Newman (36:21) again broke away during the cycle leg and showed improved form during the run to take the title from Paul Darcey (42:53) and Darren Barker (43:11). Anthea Stacey (39:41) produced an even performance to earn the women’s short course crown. Julie Kerr (40:08) and Annelize Hanekom (46:08) completed the minor placings.

The day also witnessed a breakaway movement, with a band of hardy competitors prepared to complete another race between them. Heather Malseed kicked off proceedings with an extra two laps in the pool. Heather wasn’t satisfied with that alone and added the extra degree of difficulty with two pool exits. The baton was then passed onto Darren Barker who appeared to be channeling club legend Dave ‘Silver Fox’ O’Brien in completing half an extra lap on the bike before turning back to transition. Jody Brownley then completed the farce by finishing her run leg, scoffing a muffin and drink before realizing she had one lap to go. A reminder Jody that there is enough food to go around and it can wait until you have finished racing.

For the next race Heather will be required to take a marble out of a jar at the completion of each lap until the jar is empty, then she can exit the pool. As for Mr. Barker – well if you can’t count to two…! Jody will be allowed to run with a small lunchbox.

Thank you to all those who volunteered their time as marshals; it made for a smooth race. Racing moves to Norseman next Saturday evening, with the second race of the Goldfields Esperance Tri Series. Registrations start at 4pm, with the event getting underway at 5pm. Any enquiries can be directed to club president Steve Gibson on 0411 884 058

Pace Picks Up

Handicap race #7 in the 2008/9 Tri Season produced a flurry of fast times and personal bests amongst the field of 39 competitors. The improved times reflect the heavy training undertaken by many of the athletes as they prepare for the pointy end of the season. The following two months will see competitors take part in long course races in Esperance, Norseman and Kalgoorlie as they take up the challenge against Esperance triathletes in the ‘Goldfields – Esperance Tri Series.’ As well as these events as many as 30 club members are building up for the annual Half Ironman to be held in Busselton in early May.

During Sunday’s club racing Ian Jansen put his hand up as a contender for the long course championship in claiming his second win for the season, finishing in a time of 1:32:26 (11 minute handicap). Steve Gibson (1:32:38 off 18 minutes) put in a scorching cycle leg to finish 12 seconds adrift, just ahead of Shane Joyce (1:32:49 off 20  minutes). Joyce continues to knock time off his personal best and recorded the fastest time of the day completing the course in 1:12:49. Jenny Clothier impressed with the fastest women’s time of 1:27:30, also a personal best. Other notable performances included Terry Miller (1:34:26) Heather Malseed (1:34:34) and Simon Cheeseman (1:41:37) who all cut a further two minutes of there best times.

In the short course event Julie Kerr (1:08:37 off 28 minutes) paced herself evenly to lead the field. Toni Miller (1:08:42 off 14 minutes) and Anthea Stacey 1:08:43 off 30 minutes) took out the minor placings. Stacey’s flat time of 38:43 was also the fastest women’s time with long term club member Mark Everett (35:22) the fastest of the men. Ciara Mannering recorded her fastest time (53:13) just missing a place on the dais in placing fourth.

Next week racing moves to Esperance with the Dempster Classic involving a 1km swim, 30km cycle and 6.5km run. For any enquiries about the Kalgoorlie Tri Club please contact club president Steve Gibson on 0411 884 058.

Ironman Backs Up

Competitors in the Kalgoorlie Tri Club’s Handicap Race #5 were inspired by the presence of the club’s 2 latest Ironmen.  Terry Miller and Grantley Dunks were down at the Enduro event sharing some words of wisdom before the race, with Dunks also taking part. After only 1 week’s rest, ‘Slammer’ Dunks opted for the long course in the club’s enduro event, off scratch he posted a time of  1:33:09

Once again the marshals and timekeepers were kept busy with twice as many transitions to keep track of. For the Enduro competitors complete a swim-cycle-run-swim-cycle-run. The short course consists of a 200m swim, 4km bike lap followed by a 1500m run leg, while the long course is 300m, 8km and 3km.

Line  honors went to Julie Foley, with a time of 1:27:06 (off 5mins), followed by Tess Martin completing her last race with the club (1:28:03 off 10mins).  Rounding out the top 3 in the long course was Sam Penglis in 1:28:51 off 18mins.  The short course saw Kelly Dark (1:14:19 off 24mins) in first place, Cathy Raccanello (1:14:46 off 19mins) in second and Anthea Stacey (1:15:14 off 30) in third. Anthea Stacey completed the short course in the fastest time of the day ( 45:14), while once again Shane Joyce produced the fastest long course time (1:10:06).

After the racing was completed members and families took to the water slide, Flow Rider and Tarzan.  In true competitive style the Flow Rider and Tarzan saw those who still wanted to win competing for the respective crowns of Biggest Wedgie and Biggest Stack.  Too many bathers up bottoms on the Flow Rider for there to be a clear winner, however notable stacks on the Tarzan were had by Bradley Wall, Jenny Clothier and Tanya Gibson -  Ian Malseed seemed to be doing a pretty good job of getting from end to end, fending off the attacks aimed at him. In all a fantastic day racing and socializing before the Christmas break.

See you all in the new year.

Langley Snatches Win

Tim Langley left it to the very end to overhaul a gallant Scott Newman and take out handicap race number 4 in the WorkPac 2008/9 Triathlon season. Newman, an outstanding cyclist who has decided to step up to the long course, started from an 8 minute handicap and opened up a sizeable lead after the bike leg. However Langley’s superior running gave him victory by one second finishing in a time of 1:30:55 (10 minute handicap). Eugenie Gatto, starting off 2 minutes finished third in 1:31:17. Shane Joyce (1:14:36) again recorded the fastest men’s time, with Esperance triathlete and current Goldfields Classic Champion Jody Brownley finishing fastest amongst the females in 1:17:27. we look forward to Jody stepping out with her new club next year. Heather Malseed (1:38:38) showed the benefits of a busy training schedule in knocking 7 minutes off her best, while Jo Marshall (1:29:15) continues to improve with each outing in taking her personal best down by a further two minutes.

Brett James (1:05:27 off 18 minutes) took out the short course honours from Dave O’Brien (1:08:30 off 30 minutes) and Darren Barker (1:08:51). O’Brien a long serving member of the Kalgoorlie Tri Club took the time on a visit from Queensland to race. Anthea Stacey was the fastest amongst the women in recording a personal best of 39:19  and setting a standard for others to follow. David Roberts (36:51) recorded the fastest men’s time.

In other news Simon Cheeseman set a new club record for the most number of punctured tyres by a triathlete. In an act of sympathy Daniel Kingston’s bike decided to undergo the same fate. Club members are asked to pitch in and buy Simon a set of ‘Mr. Tuffys’ to line his tyres. For those new members who haven’t met Dave O’Brien, he is a former member now living in Queensland and returned for a race this weekend. Dave is famous for his ability to make the simple look difficult and has been a multiple winner of the ‘Duck’ Award. He has once again nominated for this by getting his dates wrong for the flights over here, missing the three flights to WA and having to rebook the whole lot. Go Davo!

Racing continues next week with an enduro event in which the competitors are required to do a swim-cycle-run-swim-cycle-run. This event provides intense competition and tests the transition skills. It’s not uncommon for the odd athlete to dive in the pool before remembering to remove attached joggers. So boys and girls practice your dressing and undressing skills before Sunday. There are many ways to make this fun! A Christmas wind up will be held at the pool for all competitors. Please contact Kalgoorlie Tri Club President Steve Gibson for any membership enquiries on 0411 884058.

Wilson Leads Charge

Cool conditions tailor made for fast times greeted the 47 competitors who contested Handicap Race #3 in the Kalgoorlie Tri Club’s 2008/9 season. Jamie Wilson led the charge for the many new members to the club this season with first place in the long course. Starting with an 11 minute handicap, Wilson took advantage of a slick cycle leg to stop the clock at 1:27:21. Ian Jansen (1:30:48 off 5 minutes) overtook third place getter Julie Foley (1:30:49 off scratch) right on the line and in doing so continued his early season form with a third podium finish for the season. Foley recorded the fastest women’s time, with Shane Joyce again being the quickest around the course in 1:14:09.

Grantley Dunks (1:38:05) and Terri Miller (1:41:22) looked comfortable in completing the course to round off their preparations for the grueling Busselton Ironman Race in two weeks time. Miller and Dunks will swim 3.8km, cycle 180km and finish with a 42.2km marathon in their quest for ironman status.

In the short course event junior competitor Ben Wood (1:06:24 off 24 minutes) used his youthful legs to run down Sonia Nisbett (1:06:27 off 15 minutes) in the finish chute to claim a three second victory. Jenny Clothier (1:07:22 off 26 minutes) rounded off the short course place getters. Fastest times was a battle of the young and the old  with junior member Anthea Stacey continuing her fine form to record the fastest women’s time of 39:32. Club stalwart Graeme Christie showed plenty of speed to finish in 36:22.

Club racing continues in a fortnight’s time with handicap race #4. for any enquiries please contact club president Steve Gibson on 0411 884 058.

RACE WRAP

Corporate Tri

Sunday dawned cold, wet and very windy for the Goldfields St Ives Corporate Teams triathlon. When we arrived to set up we were wondering how many text messages and phone calls there were flying around Kalgoorlie to find out if people still wanted to compete.

39 teams competed in the triathlon, 19 mixed, 10 men’s and 10 ladies teams which was a great turn out despite the weather. Team HPS (Anthea Stacey, Scott Newman and Jacinta Henderson) blitzed the field taking out the triathlon in a time of 31:29, almost 3 minutes faster than the next team, in doing so took out first mixed team. First placed males were JPC Dudes and first place female team was JPC chicks. It seemed that there was a large amount of chalkies and coppers competing this year, well done to you all and I hope you all had some sort of bragging rights at work on Monday.

Some other interesting stats were:

Fastest swim - 4mins 12sec- 300m

Fastest bike - 15 mins 19 sec – 9kms

Run Leg  - 10 min 47 sec – 3kms

A big thankyou goes out to Low Smith and Marilyn Ward from St Ives for sponsoring the event.

Even though the weather was against us, everyone had a great time and were very appreciative of the hot tea and coffee afterwards. Once again a big thank you goes to all members who dedicated a little bit of there time to help support this event.

Race Wrap Handicap #2

We’ll that was some what different our first ever Aquathon, and from most reports it looks like we have a new permanent fixture to our calendar next year. Under perfect conditions we had 35 fresh keen triathletes participate on Saturday arvo.

With the new venture of run swim run it was interesting to hear how everybody faired during the race. Some people commented on how they found it hard to run straight up with out being all nicely warmed up, others said that they couldn’t believe how tiered there arms were in the swim even though there legs had been doing all the work but I think every one commented that the last lap of the run course was the most difficult as there wasn’t much left to give.

Short course winners were 1st Eugenio Gatto 2nd Sean Matheson 3rd Anthea Stacey, Anthea who also posted the fastest time. Long course winners were 1st Ian Jansen 2nd Jamie Wilson 3rd Steve Norris fastest was Shane Joyce, not bad considering the only training he’s been doing at late is cuddling his new born son.

The Big heart award this week went to Julie Kuskopf for here determination for finishing and the Duck award went to Mr Malseed for slipping over before attempting to do a bomby before the swim leg. There was a heap of new faces down at the club and as every year it goes to show how transit the Goldfields really is. Must mention all of the helpers who came down to marshal THANKS ALL we can’t do it with out you.

Thanks goes to Dominoes pizza who sponsored 10 Pizzas which lasted about 10 seconds, they were gladly polished of by some very hungry Aquathonaletes and there, always hungry kids. After a few beers and some nibbles we all went home feeling very happy with ourselves indeed and looking forward to next week’s corporate tri.

Until next time

Gibbo
